Incandescent Bulb and LED Brake Lights: Novel Analysis of Reaction Times
نویسندگان
چکیده
Rear-end collision accounts for around 8% of all vehicle crashes in the UK, with failure to notice or react a brake light signal being major contributory cause. Meanwhile traditional incandescent bulbs on vehicles are increasingly replaced by profusion designs featuring LEDs. In this paper, we investigate efficacy design using novel approach recording subject reaction times simulation setting physical assemblies. The 22 subjects were measured ten pairs LED and bulb lights. Three events investigated each subject, namely latency activation accelerator release (BrakeAcc), pedal depression (AccPdl), cumulative time from (BrakePdl). To our knowledge, is first study which have been split into BrakeAcc AccPdl. Results indicate that two lights containing led significantly slower compared tested eight results also show experienced quicker respond releasing pedal. Interestingly, analysis revealed type influenced AccPdl time, although did not always act than inexperienced subjects. Overall, found different can influence driver response times.

Reaction times to neon, LED, and fast incandescent brake lamps.
Standard incandescent brake lamps have a relatively slow rise time. It takes approximately a quarter of a second for them to reach 90% of asymptotic light output, causing potential delays in responses by following drivers. The present study evaluated reaction times to brake signals from standard incandescent brake lamps and from three alternative brake lamps with substantially faster rise times...
متن کاملEffect of Flashing Brake Lights on Drivers\' Brake Reaction Time and Release Gas Pedal Time
Objective: It is believed that drivers play a crucial role in accidents. Paying attention to brake lights, a driver may find out about danger and react. Rear-end collision accidents refer to the part of the accidents due to driver inattention or slow reaction. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dynamic flashing brake lights (7 Hz) on drivers' brake reaction time using the driv...

متن کاملA farewell to brake reaction times? Kinematics-dependent brake response in naturalistic rear-end emergencies.
Driver braking behavior was analyzed using time-series recordings from naturalistic rear-end conflicts (116 crashes and 241 near-crashes), including events with and without visual distraction among drivers of cars, heavy trucks, and buses. A simple piecewise linear model could be successfully fitted, per event, to the observed driver decelerations, allowing a detailed elucidation of when driver...
